Bantam Summary

February 24, 2015

Submitted by Christine Reese

After finishing their last regularly scheduled game with a 6-3 win at Warroad and one added game with the North Stars (a competitive Canadian team), us losing 4-5 the team was healthy and ready for VFW playoffs. VFW playoffs were held in Fergus Falls. Coincidentally, our first game matched us against Fergus Falls on Saturday morning at 9:00 am. We had beaten this team before Christmas back in Roseau. Oliver Lee was ready in net and Nathan Adrian scored first with an assist going to Taylor Johnson. Hanson O’Leary scored assisted by Aaron Huglen to put us up 2-0 after the first period of play. Taylor Johnson scored again from the point followed by Nick Geroy assisted from Brennen Bordun. Alex Verbout tallied assisted from Ben Helgeson and then Fergus answered with a couple goals. Alex scored again from Ben and Roseau was up comfortably 6-2 going into the third period. Hanson scored, followed by Brennen from Bryce and another goal from Hanson to make it a hat trick and then Alex also completed his hat trick. Fergus got another goal, but lost 4-10 to our very offensive team effort. We outshot them 45-20 and had things firing on all cylinders. Now some quick food and rest before we play Detroit Lakes, who beat Warroad by a goal in their first match-up.

Having beaten the Lakers before, our team was confident, but second game of the day and in playoffs, anything can happen if you don’t come out ready to play and take charge. After a whole period of no scoring, we got on the board with two unassisted goals from Alex and Hanson. Taylor Johnson scored assisted by Alex and Nick and then another goal from Alex to put us up 4-0 before Detroit Lakes answered with a deflection goal. Hanson scored again and Roseau was in control of the game despite the slow start. Alex scored and open net goal and Roseau won 6-1. Oliver played well in net again controlling rebounds and nearly earned the shutout.

The team was relieved and in the Championship game against a tough Moorhead team. Usually one would have to win the Championship to advance to the VFW state, but in this case since it is Moorhead’s turn to host and the host team automatically qualifies into the tournament, our Roseau team would also advance to state whether they win or lose on Sunday. Moorhead tallied the first four goals before Nathan scored assisted from Alex. Taylor Johnson rifled a slap shot from the point into the net and now down 2-4 and working hard against a bigger, faster, stronger team. Moorhead scored again and after two periods it was 2-5 with shots 30-13 in their favor. Moorhead scored a total of 8 goals and Alex got a nice power play goal assisted from Hanson and Aaron. 8-3 was the final and shots were 50-25 in their favor. Not a bad effort, Moorhead is just that good. Our team had a great weekend of hockey with many players stepping up and the entire team has improved tremendously. They will need to work hard for another month before the State VFW takes place in Moorhead the end of March. MAHA playoffs are in Roseau this weekend so come out and watch some very competitive Bantam AA hockey. Thanks for all the supports and good luck to all the teams still competing.
