~~Zach Yon notched a hattrick in a 7-4 win over arch rival Moorhead Wednesday to advance to next week’s State Boy’s Hockey tournament. Roseau will make their record setting 34th trip to the tournament and first since 2010.
The Rams took their first lead of the game at 7:47 of the first period on an Alex Strand one timer from the slot and a nice feed from Zach Yon. AJ Hogenson picked up the second assist on the goal. The Strand goal was the lone goal scored in the period with the Rams leading 1-0 after the opening period. The Spuds held a slight lead in shots for the period outshooting the Rams by a 15-9 margin.
The second period was a crazy one with both teams combining for eight goals with each team scoring four times. Moorhead capitalized on the power play three times in the period with Aaron Herdt scoring twice along with single tallies from Jacob Odegard and Grant Weiss. Odegard’s goal came early in the second on the power play tying the game at 1-1. Roseau regained the lead just under two minutes later when Brady Castle took a one timer feed from Jack Helgeson beating Spuds goaltender Jacob Dittmer low to the glove side. Jack Helgeson would pick up one of his own 1:52 later when he beat Dittmer with a quick wrist from low in the slot. Dylan Mielke and Brady Castle picked up the helpers on the goal and gave the Rams a brief two goal lead at 3-1. At 9:41 the Spuds started their comeback with Herdt picking up is first goal of the night on a wrap around goal cutting the Ram lead to 3-2. Two minutes later Grant Weiss tied it up at 3-3, redirecting a Will Borgen shot from the left point. The Moorhead momentum shift didn’t last long when Yon picked up his first of the night sending a blast past Dittmer and the Rams regained the lead at 4-3. Herdt once again came up big for the Spuds scoring on a nice snipe from the top of the right circle while on the power play and the game was tied back up at 4-4. The Rams quickly responded again just eighteen seconds later when Yon beat Dittmer again with Alex Strand credited with the assist closing out the scoring with the Rams leading 5-4 after the second session. Both teams combined with 26 shots on goal for the period in an offensive scoring frenzy.
The third period was scoreless until 12:08 when Yon completed his hattrick with Alex Strand picking up his second assist of the game and extended the Ram lead to 6-4. The Spuds closed out the game on the power play and with an extra attacker on the ice but at 16:20 of the period the Rams Alex Strand picked up his second goal of the night with an empty net goal closing the scoring for the game and giving the Rams a 7-4 victory and clinching a spot in the 2014 state tournament. Jacob Dittmer closed out the game with 18 saves on 24 Ram shots while Ryan Anderson finished with 29 saves on 33 Spud shots.
Roseau (20-7-1) will now play the #2 seed Lakeville North Panthers at 11:00 am Thursday in the opening game of the state tournament. The Spuds close out the season at 13-11-1.
